Between July 1967 and January 1970, the Federation of Nigeria was embroiled in a bloody civil war. After gaining its independence from Britain in October 1960, the large West African country struggled to maintain unity among its principal ethnic groups and regions: the Ibo in the southeast, the Hausa in the north, and the Yoruba in the southwest.
