Address by the President of the International Criminal Tribunal for Rwanda to the United Nations General Assembly

Navanethem Pillay

Abstract

Mr President, Honourable Members of the General Assembly, it is my honour to present to you a report of the activities of the International Criminal Tribunal for Rwanda (the “ICTR”) for the year 2000-2001.

A full and detailed report has been submitted to you for the period 1 July 2000 to 30 June 2001. I shall focus on several important areas of that report.

When I presented my report to you a year ago in November 2000, I informed you that judicial, administrative and prosecutorial steps had been undertaken during that year to prepare the ground for holding uninterrupted trials in the year 2001. These endeavors included a change in management, the finalisation of pre-trial litigation and disposing of the backlog of some 200 motions.
