The Implication of China's Engagement with Africa: Challenges and Opportunities

Hany Besada

Abstract

This article examines the extent to which China's engagement with Africa produced mutual benefits for both and whether Africa is reaping the necessary benefits required for poverty alleviation and economic development. While many in the West are questioning China's extraordinary level of interest in Africa, African leaders view China's entry into their continent as a means of pulling Africa towards the path of globalization. It is incumbent on African policy-makers to actively ensure that Chinese trade with and investment in the continent promote reciprocal and tangible benefits for the African population, while ensuring economic stability and good governance.
