Which African Woman?: A Photo Essay

Abraham Ali

Abstract

Diverse images of Kenyan women question the monolithic label "Kenyan woman" as a way of contesting the label "African woman." This photo essay further challenges the notion of women excluded from public spaces and the idea of one beauty ideal, providing a glimpse into the capacity of women on the continent to occupy multiple spaces and identities. Next time you are tempted to assign a single narrative for the women of Africa, stop and ask, "Who is the African woman?"
