Portia Simpson Miller: A Woman of Courage

Abstract


This is the profile of Portia Simpson Miller, Prime Minister of Jamaica, who Dwight Bellanfante of the Jamacian Observer, dubbed a woman of courage. Portia Simpson Miller was sworn in as the seventh Prime Minister and first female Head of the Government of Jamaica on March 30. She took over from P. J. Patterson after her party the People’s National Party defeated in an election. Mr. Patterson proceeded on retirement on March 30 after he tendered his resignation to the Governor-General.
